Overview of Device Modules
The proposed device consists of four modules (signal acquisition, signal processing, user interface, and power), shown in Figure 1. The measurement process is as follows: when the recording switch is pressed, the microphone will record acoustic signals from the patient's suprasternal notch (anterior to the trachea on the skin's surface) for 15 seconds. The signals will be amplified and transmitted to the microcontroller, where the spectral features indicative of pneumonia will be extracted. Based on the features, the microcontroller will perform a classification to determine the percentage likelihood that the individual has pneumonia (based on software details described below), and this percentage will be displayed on an LED display screen on the enclosure of the device. The following sections outline the form and function of each module in detail, concluding with the parts that were chosen to implement the module in our final design.
